MU sweeps past Defiance

DEFIANCE, OHIO – Led by second-through-seventh place individual finishes on the men's and women's portions of the team race, Manchester University wound up with 20-point totals on both sides Friday, Sept. 6.

Competing on the course that will host the 2013 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships, the Spartans were led by runner-up marks from senior Jon Cafarelli (Lansing, Ill.) and freshman Mariah Jordan (Fort Wayne, Ind.). Cafarelli circled the DC campus course in 27:45 flat, trailing only the Yellowjackets' Joe Davis. Jordan completed the race in 26:30.5, as Defiance's Emilee Miller ran a 25:48.2 for first.

Junior Cayla Pusey (Fort Wayne, Ind.), sophomore Anna McGowen (Wiliamsport, Ind.) and freshman Tiffany Harber (Columbia City) placed third through fifth for the women. Seniors Michael Stocker (Yorktown, Ind.) and Chris LaFree (South Bend, Ind.) joined freshman Blake Harris (Fort Wayne, Ind.) to finish up the same way for the men.

The No. 29-ranked Division III and No. 3-ranked Great Lakes Region United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association men's squad and the women's team move into a key section of meets beginning Saturday, Sept. 14. A large and talented field converges on the NCAA Division III national meet course at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich., for the Knights Invitational.
