KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The host Kalamazoo College Hornets outlasted visiting Manchester on Wednesday evening, defeating the Spartans in five sets, 25-22, 20-25, 25-21, 24-26, 15-12.
Manchester and Kalamazoo had met previously two weeks ago in North Manchester. KC won the prior meeting in three sets.
Kalamazoo held a steady advantage against Manchester through three sets of action, claiming victories in the first and third sets by scores of 25-22 and 25-21. Manchester pieced together a strong second set, earning a 25-20 victory.
Trailing two-sets-to-one, Manchester battled back in the fourth set, edging Kalamazoo 26-24. MU carried that momentum into the fifth set, jumping out to an early 4-1 lead. The Hornets steadied themselves and rallied to take a 10-7 lead, forcing a Spartan timeout. Kalamazoo went on to take the final set by a score of 15-12.
Alexandria Collins (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) led Manchester University with a career-high 42 assists. Collins added 13 digs. Helaina Walters (Marion, Ind./Eastbrook) led four Spartans in double figures in digs with 25. Anna Marie Lawrie (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) and Rachel Ressler (Tipton, Ind./Tipton) added 19 and 18 digs respectively.
Halle Planck (Gas City, Ind./Mississinewa) finished with 13 kills. Kara Heckmuller (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) chipped in 10 kills while Samantha Campbell (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) added 7 solo blocks and 3 block assists.
Kalamazoo improved to 10-3 on the year. The Spartans (3-5) will gear up for their volleyball invite this weekend set for Friday and Saturday September 20 and 21. The Spartans will play four matches over the weekend. Teams participating in this year's Manchester Invite are Indiana-Northwest, Ancilla CC, Terra State CC, Anderson, and Governors State.
