Spartan Shorts: Interim head coach Ivan Matos' team has been on a roll of late, winning four seven to improve to 4-8 on the year and 1-0 in league action .. The senior tandem of right side hitter Haley Duncan (Albion, Ind.) and setter Dakota Stanichuk (Athens, Mich.) finds itself ranked in the HCAC's statistical top five. Duncan is tied for the lead in kills per set (3.49) along with Mt. St. Joseph University of Ohio's Cailey Plemmons, and Stanichuk is fourth-best in service aces per set (.45). Digging deeper, Duncan's 150 total kills are just three short of the first five; junior defensive specialist/libero Anna Marie Lawrie's (Indianapolis, Ind.) 3.98 digs per set are among the top 10 (No. 8); and Stanichuk is one spot shy of the first 10 in assists per set (4.26) … Duncan is the back-to-back conference Offensive Player of the Week. She earned her second straight honor Sept. 24 after garnering her fourth 20-plus kill effort of the season with a career-high 25 in a conference-opening win against Franklin Sept. 22. The senior concluded last week with 32 kills in seven sets with a .358 hitting percentage … Duncan's big afternoon was just part of the story that allowed the Black and Gold to begin the conference campaign on a strong note.  Freshman middle/outside hitter Samantha Campbell (Brownsburg, Ind.) smashed 11 kills, and senior middle hitter Hannah Tevis (Royal Center, Ind.) got a gilttering afternoon going with ten kills of her own. Meanwhile, Manchester University's back row didn't allow many Grizzlies' offensive attempts to find empty floor, as Lawrie reeled off her seventh straight match with 10-or-more digs (19), sophomore defensive specialist/libero Mackenzie Rooks (Columbus, Ind.) finished with 16, and senior outside hitter Kaitlin Mindiola (Coatsville, Ind.) added 13. The Spartans' 25-20, 23-25, 25-23, 25-15 victory highlighted a split of tri-match results. A high-flying Baldwin-Wallace University of Ohio squad, improving to 17-1, swept past the home side 25-16, 25-17, 25-14. Tevis was a tough puzzle for the Yellow Jackets' defense, hammering eight kills and registering a .350 attack percentage, and Lawrie increased her double-digit digs' string to eight (11) … Following the match against the Fightin' Engineers, the Spartans begin seven in a row on the road with a tri-match at Earlham College Saturday, Sept. 29. MU takes on the Quakers at 1 p.m. and the University of Cincinnati at Clermont at 3 p.m. inside Druley Performance Gymnasium on EC's campus.
