Interim head coach Ivan Matos and the Spartans are among the tournament field at Lake Forest College of suburban Chicago, Ill., Friday and Saturday, August 31 and September 1.
Tourney details: Manchester University's 2018 squad takes on Carroll College of Wisconsin and the Milwaukee School of Engineering at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, respectively, Friday. They round out their two-day appearance at LFC's Sports and Recreation Center Saturday against Loras College of Iowa and the host Foresters at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, respectively … Live video is available for both matches Saturday via links at www.muspartans.com, the Internet home of Manchester University athletics.
Spartan Shorts: The Black and Gold, selected for a top-eight effort on the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference's preseason poll, will look to a veteran group to lead the way this fall. Among that group, the senior duo of right side hitter Haley Duncan of Albion, Ind., and middle hitter Emma Voelker of North Bend, Ohio, who played essential roles in the transition process this past offseason, are hoping to have the same success on the court. Duncan is a returning all-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference honoree who powered over 200 kills at the opposition to the tune of a .214 attack percentage, and Voelker played a vital role in the middle with a respectable .154 attack percentage and 15 total blocks over 15 match appearances as a junior … Matos has plenty of other offensive and defensive possibilities at hand, too. Senior middle hitter Hannah Tevis (Royal Center, Ind.), a former all-freshman HCAC honoree, has gone above 500 career kills and 150 career blocks as a staple along the front line; senior outside hitter Kaitlin Mindiola (Coatesville, Ind.) has seen action as a sophomore and junior; the senior-sophomore setters pair of Dakota Stanichuk (Athens, Mich.) and Lauren Gandhi (Westfield, Ind.) saw a lions share of the starts at their slot a year ago; and the defensive specialist/libero crew that includes junior Anna Marie Lawrie (Indianapolis, Ind.) and sophomores MacKenzie Rooks (Columbus, Ind.) and Alexandria Collins (Lowell, Ind.) proved difficult for opposing offenses to find attacking spaces last season.
Road View Continues: A season-opening string of five straight matches away from the friendly confines of Stauffer-Wolfe Arena resumes Tuesday, Sept. 4. The Spartans take on St. Mary's College of Indiana in a 7 p.m. clash at SMC's Angela Athletic and Wellness Complex in Notre Dame, Ind.
