Important league set begins Wednesday

The Oklahoma land rush might be the best visual to describe the chase for spots in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference postseason tournament as the regular season winds down.

Match details: Manchester University (11-8 overall, 2-4 league) visits Defiance College's Karl H. Weaner Center for a 7 p.m. start … Live audio, stats and video can be accessed via links at, the Internet home of Manchester University athletics … Just two and a half matches separate third through ninth place in the league standings. Coach Bryndon Paulsen's crew has won three straight total which included a triumph over Anderson University Oct. 11 that put them just a match out in the loss column from a tie between Earlham College and Mt. St. Joseph for fifth place. DC (8-10 overall, 3-3 conference) has lost two in a row … Fans in attendance could be in for donnybrook. Since 2010, the two sides have gone at least four sets six times including four contests that went the distance. MU snapped a seven-match skid in the series with a four-set win during conference tournament quarterfinal play last season.

Spartan Shorts: The Black and Gold are mentioned in the top 10 of six HCAC statistical categories. Junior right side hitter Haley Duncan (Albion, Ind.), due to a run of six straight matches in which she's tallied 10-or-more kills, stands sixth in kills per set (2.89); sophomore middle hitter Riley Patterson (Walkerton, Ind.) has the eighth-best attack percentage (.273); sophomore defensive specialist/libero Anna Marie Lawrie (Indianapolis, Ind.) is ninth in digs per set (3.97); freshman setter Lauren Gandhi (Westfield, Ind.) sits ninth in assists per game (5.42); and Gandhi and senior outside hitter Ally Roskos (Elkhart, Ind.) are three-four in service aces per set at .5 and .49 … The Spartans' current win streak was helped along by a sweep of Ohio University at Chillicothe and the University of Cincinnati at Clermont Oct. 14. A quartet consisting of Patterson; junior middle hitter Emma Voelker (North Bend, Ohio); junior middle hitter Hannah Tevis (Royal Center, Ind.); and Duncan made life difficult for OU-Chillicothe. Duncan drilled 10 kills with only two errors in 22 attempts for a .364 attack percentage; Tevis was just as active with seven kills, just one error, and a .353 clip; Voelker was nearly perfect with six kills in seven attempts for an astronomical .857 percentage; and Patterson hit at .429 with three kills and no errors in seven chances. Duncan and Tevis were just as tough on the defensive end, each totaling three blocks. Match two saw more of the same. Duncan rattled 17 kills at UC-Clermont; Tevis came back high with 12 kills and a .435 attack percentage; and sophomore outside hitter Emma DeWitt (Brookston, Ind.) added 11 kills.

On The Road Again: Manchester University returns to the Buckeye State Saturday, Oct. 21, to take on Mt. St. Joseph in conference action.
