Black and Gold forge split during day one

LAKE FOREST, ILL. – Junior right side hitter Haley Duncan led a quartet of Manchester University players compiling double-digit kills Friday, Sept. 1.

Duncan hammered a total of 28 (13 against the host Lake Forest Foresters and 15 against the Milwaukee School of Engineering), helping lift Coach Bryndon Paulsen's Spartans to a split during the first day of the Lake Forest Forester Invitational. The Albion, Ind., native added 10 digs and three block assists to her totals.

Senior outside hitter Ally Roskos (Elkhart, Ind.) and sophomore outside hitter Emma DeWitt (Brookston, Ind.) wound up with 17 kills each. Junior middle hitter Hannah Tevis (Royal Center, Ind.) added her name to the double-digit kill list (14).

Manchester University started the day off with a four-set loss to the hosts and then rebounded against MSOE. The nightcap victory was hard-fought featuring a 33-31 first set final as part of a four-set victory.

Other top numbers for the Spartans came from sophomore defensive specialist/libero Anna Marie Lawrie (Indianapolis, Ind.) (37 digs); freshman setter Lauren Gandhi (Westfield, Ind.) (40 assists/four service aces); and junior middle hitter Emma Voelker (North Bend, Ohio) (four blocks).

The Black and Gold continue play at the tournament Saturday, Sept. 2. They face off against Aurora University of Illinois and the University of Dubuque.
