Spartans take fifth seed into HCAC tourney

Manchester University competes in its second successive Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference postseason tournament Wednesday, Nov. 2.

Match details: The Spartans (17-11) are the fifth seed and travel to Defiance College of Ohio for a 7 p.m. first serve at the Karl H. Weaner Center on DC's campus. It's one of two quarterfinal round contests with third seeded Rose-Hulman hosting sixth-seeded Transylvania in the other. The winners advance to the semifinals, hosted by regular season champion Hanover College, Friday, Nov. 4 … Live statistics can be accessed via a link at www.muspartans.com, the Internet home of Manchester University athletics … The Yellow Jackets hold a seven-game win streak in the series which includes a four-set thriller earlier this season at Stauffer-Wolfe Arena. The string has been anything but easy though as, since 2010, five of the matches have gone at least four sets with three of them going the distance. These same two sides met up in the 2015 HCAC quarterfinals with Defiance holding on for a four-set decision at home.

Senior outside hitter Courtney Chowning (Yorktown, Ind.) is the school's second-ranked individual in career kills (1,133), while her numbers this season are among the league's top five (total kills – 329/kills per set – 3.5 – No. 3); sophomore setter Dakota Stanichuk (Athens, Mich.) has jetted into third in career assists (1,703) while her season totals are first in the HCAC per set in regards to assists (10.1) and service aces (.42); sophomore middle hitter Emma Voelker (North Bend, Ohio) has climbed into the league's top five in blocks (.8 per set); freshman middle hitter Riley Patterson (Kokomo, Ind.) ranks seventh in the HCAC in hitting percentage (.242); and freshman defensive specialist/libero Anna Marie Lawrie (Indianapolis, Ind.) sits ninth in digs per set (3.91) and 10th in total digs (368). Stanichuk also has high residence nationally assists-wise, sitting at No. 26 in NCAA Division III.
