Spartan Shorts: Manchester University has firmed up a bid to the 2016 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference postseason tournament. The Spartans can still position themselves for another home match Wednesday, Nov. 2, if various factors come into play later this week. The full tourney pairings will be released Saturday evening, Oct. 29 … Chowning and sophomore setter Dakota Stanichuk (Athens, Mich.) each go into the regular season's final week ranked in the league's statistical top five. Stanichuk is the leader in assists (10.13) and service aces (.45) per set, and Chowning is just a hundredth of a kill per set behind Bluffton University's Mackenzie McFarlin for first (.359-3.58) and stands as one of only three conference players with 300-or-more kills, joining McFarlin and Earlham College's Ashleigh Burton. Stanichuk's assist totals are among the top 50 in NCAA Division III as she is 28th per set and 48th overall … The Black and Gold look to expand a modest two-match win streak, as they're coming off back-to-back three-set sweeps of Great Lakes Christian and Illinois Tech Oct. 22. A meteoric .285 team hitting percentage lifted the team and improved its season record to 14-11. Sophomore outside hitter Farren Miller (Lebanon, Ind.) led the offense with 19 kills and only three errors in 41 attempts. She was joined by freshman outside hitter Emma DeWitt (Brookston, Ind.) (six kills – .500 hitting percentage) and freshman middle hitter Riley Patterson (Warsaw, Ind.) (eight kills - .353 attack percentage) as Spartans who hit .300 or higher. Miller turned in a kills-digs double-double with 17 denials of opponent attack attempts; sophomore middle hitter Hannah Tevis (Royal Center, Ind.) proved tough on the opposition defensively, too, with four blocks, three of which were solo; and sophomore libero/defensive specialist Morgan Oliver (Alexandria, Ind.) who served up five aces. Chowning, who had a strong effort with 11 kills, two service aces, six digs and a pair of blocks, kept climbing up the program's career kills ladder. She became just the third MU athlete to reach 1100.
Regular Season Finale: Coach Bryndon Paulsen's crew faces off against Earlham College in HCAC play at 1 p.m. and Boyce the College at Southern out of Louisville, Ky., at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29. Both contests are set for Schuckman Court at the Druley Performance Gymnasium on EC's campus in Richmond, Ind.
