NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Four Spartans wound up in kill double digits, sparking a pivotal five-set Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference win over Mt. St. Joseph University Saturday, Oct. 16.
Sophomore right side hitter Haley Duncan (Albion, Ind.) drilled 15 kills and hit .216 against the Lions' defense, leading the quartet. Senior outside hitter Courtney Chowning (Yorktown, Ind.), during an afternoon in which she moved into third on the program's career kills' list, registered a double-double with digs, recording 14 and 21, respectively. Sophomore middle hitter Hannah Tevis (Royal Center, Ind.) recorded a big effort with 13 kills and a .333 attack percentage, and sophomore outside hitter Farren Miller (Lebanon, Ind.) tallied 10 kills.
Coach Bryndon Paulsen's squad needed every bit of those numbers. After dropping a 25-22 final in the first set, the Black and Gold brought their home crowd to its feet with 25-23, 25-21 decisions. However, the visitors forced a fifth set decider after claiming a 28-26 fourth set marathon. MU managed its 12th overall and fourth league win of the year reversing an early 3-1 deficit in route to a 15-10 win for the match.
Manchester University closed its day by taking aim at going 2-0 with a clash against Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opponent Adrian College. The Bulldogs didn't acquiesce though tallying a robust .312 team attack percentage as part of a 25-21, 25-22, 25-14 sweep.
MU (12-10 overall, 4-3 HCAC) begins three in a row away from home Wednesday, Oct. 19, traveling to Bluffton University of Ohio for a 7 p.m. league match.
NOTE: Sophomore setter Dakota Stanichuk (Athens, Mich.) became the school's fifth player to reach 1,500 career assists Saturday. She totaled 85 over the two matches and was also the team's service ace leader (three).
