Spartan Shorts: The clash with the Bulldogs of Adrian is MU's seventh against the HCAC's northern conference neighbors. Prior results versus the MIAA have seen the Black and Gold go 2-4 with back-to-back wins over Kalamazoo and Trine at a September tri-match in Angola … Senior outside hitter Courtney Chowning (Yorktown, Ind.) and sophomore setter Dakota Stanichuk (Athens, Mich.) continue to track up the school record charts. Chowning, who recently became the fourth Spartans' player to reach the 1,000-career kill standard, is only 19 shy of passing former standout Stephanie Rion for third place on the all-time list. Stanichuk, among a group of five setters to compile 1,000-career assists, needs just two more to climb into the 1,500 club … Coach Bryndon Paulsen's crew began its week with a white-knuckle ride in conference play versus Defiance Oct. 12. A set away from a fourth league victory, Manchester University was turned away by the Yellow Jackets down the stretch. Despite the hard-fought defeat, there were many highlights for the home team. Chowning delivered a kills-digs double-double (16-20) to go with three block assists; sophomore right side hitter Haley Duncan (Albion, Ind.) produced 13 kills and five blocks, one of which was solo; and sophomore middle hitter Hannah Tevis (Royal Center, Ind.) turned in 10 kills and two block assists. Other top numbers went to Stanichuk (44 assists, two service aces and 12 digs); freshman middle hitter Riley Patterson (Kokomo, Ind.) (three block assists, three service aces); and freshman libero/defensive specialist Anna Marie Lawrie (Indianapolis, Ind.) (18 digs) … After Saturday's matches, MU takes to the road for three in a row beginning with another pivotal conference contest Wednesday, Oct. 19, as they travel to Bluffton University of Ohio for a 7 p.m. start.
