NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – A topsy-turvy Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference match-up at Stauffer-Wolfe Arena needed the full five sets for a decision Wednesday, Oct. 15.
After the host Manchester University Spartans answered a 26-24 first set defeat at the hands of Defiance College with 25-20, 25-21 victories in the second and third, DC rallied to force the decider after a 25-14 fourth set final. The two sides went back and forth early in the fifth, being tied five times before the visitors reeled off five straight points in route to the 15-8 decision and match victory.
Despite a defeat that sent them to 11-9 overall and 3-3 in the league, MU did get some statistical highlights in front of a raucous crowd of nearly 600 fans. Senior outside hitter Courtney Chowning (Yorktown, Ind.) delivered a kills-digs double-double (16-20) to go with three block assists; sophomore right side hitter Haley Duncan (Albion, Ind.) produced 13 kills and five blocks, one of which was solo; and sophomore middle hitter Hannah Tevis (Royal Center, Ind.) turned in 10 kills and two block assists. Other top numbers went to sophomore setter Dakota Stanichuk (Athens, Mich.) (44 assists, two service aces and 12 digs); freshman middle hitter Riley Patterson (Kokomo, Ind.) (three block assists, three service aces); and freshman libero/defensive specialist Anna Marie Lawrie (Indianapolis, Ind.) (18 digs).
The Black and Gold look to stem a three-match skid Saturday, Oct. 15. They host Mt. St. Joseph University of Ohio and Adrian College of Michigan in a tri-match. Manchester University takes on the Lions in HCAC play at 1 p.m. and the Bulldogs of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association at 5 p.m.
