Black and Gold, Defiance face off in mid-week meeting

A run of three successive home matches beings Wednesday, Oct. 12, for Manchester University.

Match details: The Spartans (11-8 overall, 3-2 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference) host Defiance College (5-11, 1-2 HCAC) at 7 p.m. … Live audio, statistics and video can be accessed via a link at www.muspartans.com, the Internet home of Manchester University athletics … DC and MU have a propensity for thrilling matches. Since 2010, the two sides have gone at least four sets four times including three that went the distance. Defiance owns a six-match win streak in the series with the last Black and Gold victory occurring in 2010.

Spartan Shorts: MU gave National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics members Huntington University and Aquinas College of Michigan stern tests during a tri-match at HU's Platt Arena Oct. 8. The Black and Gold appeared on the verge of sending both contests into decisive fifth sets after winning 25-17 against the Foresters and 25-23 versus the Saints in respective third sets. Aquinas edged them 25-23 in the fourth, while HU needed extra points to hold off Coach Bryndon Paulsen's side 33-31 for the match victory. Senior outside hitter Courtney Chowning (Yorktown, Ind.), who earlier in the week had become the fourth player in program history to reach 1,000-career kills, continued a stretch of four straight double-digit kill outings and three consecutive double-doubles in kills and digs with 17 and 18 against Huntington and 12 and 22 versus Aquinas. Other impressive individual skeins also continued in MU's neighboring county as freshman defensive specialist/libero Anna Marie Lawrie (Indianapolis, Ind.) upped her double-digit dig streak to 12 successive contests; sophomore setter Dakota Stanichuck (Athens, Mich.) registered 30-or-more assists for the third and fourth straight appearances; and sophomore middle hitter Emma Voelker (North Bend, Ohio) picked up where she left off on being tough on opposing defenses, tallying four-or-more total blocks for the second and third times in her last four matches as part of having at least one in four straight outings … Chowning and Stanichuk continue to lead conference statistical categories in regards to kills, assists and service aces per set. Chowning's 3.65 average in the attacking area is first, while her 241 total kills are fourth-highest. Stanichuk ranks first in assists (10.16) and ace serves (.48).  They also hold residence within the top 70 of NCAA Division III, as Chowning's kill numbers are 64th-highest, and Stanichuk is 19th in assists.

Saturday Tri-Match: Mt. St. Joseph University and Adrian College are the Spartans' guests Oct. 15 at Stauffer-Wolfe Arena. Match times are 1 p.m. (MU-MSJ), 3 p.m. (MSJ-Adrian), and 5 p.m. (MU-Adrian).
