HANOVER, IND./LEXINGTON, KY. – Making life difficult on Transylvania University's defense, Manchester University finished with four players with double-digit kills Sunday, Oct. 2.
Coach Bryndon Paulsen's squad, improving to 10-6 overall and 2-2 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference, overcame a 25-20 first set loss to the Pioneers inside the Clive Beck Center with 25-20, 25-22, 25-17 decisions for a four-set victory. Senior outside hitter Courtney Chowning (Yorktown, Ind.) (14 kills), sophomore right side hitter Haley Duncan (Albion, Ind.) (12 kills), sophomore middle hitter Hannah Tevis (Royal Center, Ind.) (10 kills) and sophomore outside hitter Farren Miller (Lebanon, Ind.) (10 kills) led the charge in the program's first win over Transylvania since 2007.
Other top-notch numbers for the Spartans came from sophomore setter Dakota Stanichuk (Athens, Mich.) who tallied 41 assists and six service aces; Tevis and fellow sophomore middle hitter Emma Voelker (North Bend, Ohio) who engineered five blocks apiece; and freshman libero/defensive specialist Anna Marie Lawrie (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Miller who each turned in 20-or-more digs with 25 and 22, respectively.
The Black and Gold began their two-day journey with a three-set loss at the hands of Hanover College Saturday, Oct. 1. Chowning tallied seven kills, while Miller and freshman middle hitter Riley Patterson (Kokomo, Ind.) ended with five each. Chowning also tallied 13 digs and three block assists to lead the statistical charts.
Manchester University continues a string of six straight road contests Wednesday, Oct. 5. They travel to Anderson University for a 7 p.m. first serve.
