Spartan Shorts: Senior outside hitter Courtney Chowning (Yorktown, Ind.) and sophomore outside hitter Farren Miller (Lebanon, Ind.) each posted double-doubles in kills and digs Sept. 21, but it wasn't enough overcome a tremendous front line defensive effort from visiting Rose-Hulman. Chowning (13 kills, 13 digs and two service aces) and Miller (12 kills and 11 digs) aided the Black and Gold attack. Sophomore middle hitter Hannah Tevis (Royal Center, Ind.) tallied a pair of solo blocks and aced a pair of service attempts, while sophomore setter Dakota Stanichuk (Athens, Mich.) turned in 37 assists for the other statistical category leads … The Spartans are among three top five statistical categories in the conference. Chowning, who harbors a run of nine consecutive matches with double figures in kills, is second in kills per set (3.77), and she's tied with Stanichuk for fourth in service aces per set (.46). Stanichuk leads the league in assists per set (9.97) … The sophomore setter's rise to the loop top spot is due to seven straight matches with 30-or-more. Other impressive skeins for the Black and Gold come from freshman defensive specialist/libero Anna Marie Lawrie (Indianapolis, Ind.) who's finished with double digits in digs in five successive contests; freshman middle hitter Riley Patterson (Kokomo, Ind.) due to four outings in a row with either a solo or assisted block; and Stanichuk who's registered at least one service ace in all but two matches this season.
