Five-team field highlights MU Invitational

Manchester University starts a run of six straight home matches at its invitational Friday and Saturday, Sept. 16 and 17.

Tourney details: Matches are at 4, 6 and 8 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. and 1 and 3 p.m. Saturday on two courts inside Stauffer-Wolfe Arena … The Spartans (3-4) are joined by Wilmington College of Ohio, Indiana University-Northwest, Great Lakes Christian College and Governors State University.

Spartan Shorts: The Black and Gold sport a modest two-match win skein coming into the weekend … Previous results at their home invitational have been mixed. MU won three of four contests in 2012; split their four competitions in 2014 which was most recent; and went 1-3 in 2013 … Senior outside hitter Courtney Chowning (Yorktown, Ind.), just five kills shy of completing a run of four straight collegiate campaigns in triple digits, has a string of five successive matches in double figures. Her roll has been a big reason why the senior ranks in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference's overall top five in kills and kills per set. Chowning also continues to track towards becoming the fourth Spartans' player with 1,000 for her career, sitting only 101 shy of the mark … Sophomore setter Dakota Stanichuk (Athens, Mich.) reached a personal and program milestone last weekend during a triangular at Trine University. Compiling a combined 66 during wins over Kalamazoo and the host Thunder, she became the program's sixth setter to reach 1,000 for her career. The sophomore joins Chowning in ranking within the top five of two overall league statistical categories, as she's in the scenario in assists and service aces per set … Two more underclasswomen, sophomore middle hitter Hannah Tevis (Royal Center, Ind.) and freshman libero/defensive specialist Anna Marie Lawrie (Indianapolis, Ind.) are team statistical leaders as well. Tevis is first in blocks (11), and Lawrie's 78 digs lead the way.

Conference Campaign Begins: Rose-Hulman pays a visit to North Manchester Wednesday, Sept. 21. First serve is 7 p.m. for the loop opener for both schools.
