ANGOLA, IND. – Manchester University nearly evened the season slate in its non-conference battles with the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Saturday, Sept. 10.
The Spartans, rising to 3-4 on the young season, swept past Kalamazoo and rallied past a determined Trine University squad inside Hershey Hall on TU's campus. Opening the afternoon with a 25-18, 25-18, 25-19 victory over the Hornets, just a week removed from a three-set loss to Kzoo, senior outside hitter Courtney Chowning (Yorktown, Ind.) kept on rolling with a digs and kills double-double of 10 and 10. She was joined by sophomore outside hitter Farren Miller (Lebanon, Ind.) who registered a similar feat (12 kills – 10 digs) to go along with a huge effort from freshman middle hitter Riley Patterson (Kokomo, Ind.) who put down 10 kills to the tune of a .421 attack percentage.
Closing the afternoon against the 1-6 Thunder, MU had to scratch and claw its way to a five-set 17-25, 25-21, 19-25, 26-24, 15-11 decision. Struggling offensively with 40 hitting errors among 170 attempts, the Black and Gold did get another strong outing from Chowning who moved five kills shy of another triple-digit campaign due to 13 against the hosts. Sophomore middle hitter Hannah Tevis (Royal Center, Ind.) proved a key commodity hitting at a .471 rate with nine kills, while service aces played an important part, too, as the Spartans ended with 13, as Chowning compiled seven, and freshman libero Anna Marie Lawrie (Indianapolis, Ind.) wound up with three to go with 16 digs.
Coach Bryndon Paulsen's team begins a span of six successive matches on their home floor at Stauffer-Wolfe Arena Friday and Saturday, Sept. 16 and 17, hosting its invitational.
