Spartan Shorts: MU has seen a lot of its conference's northern neighbors. They'll have played six of their first seven versus the MIAA at week's end … Coach Bryndon Paulsen's squad battled in a hard-fought four-set loss to fellow MIAA member St. Mary's Sept. 7. Senior outside hitter Courtney Chowning (Yorktown, Ind.) drilled 22 kills, going over the 20-mark for the third time in her illustrious Spartans' career. She guided an offensive attack that totaled 52 for the night with sophomore right side hitter Haley Duncan (Albion, Ind.) also compiling double digits (12). Chowning was a weapon defensively, too, tallying three blocks, as did sophomore middle hitter Hannah Tevis (Royal Center, Ind.). Sophomore setter Dakota Stanichuk (Athens, Mich.) led the way in assists (39) and service aces (three) … Chowning goes to Angola as the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference's leader in kills (total – 70/per set – four). Stanichuk is among the league's top five in assists per set, as her 9.61 average ranks second.

Home Tournament: The Spartans welcome Great Lakes Christian College of Michigan; Wilmington College of Ohio; Governor's State College of Illinois and Indiana University – Northwest to the field for their invitational Friday and Saturday, Sept. 16 and 17.
