Manchester University's 2016 volleyball squad takes to the Stan Weller Court in honor of Coaches Hoffman and Wolfe inside Stauffer-Wolfe Arena for the first time Wednesday, Sept. 7.
Match details: First serve is 7 p.m. as the St. Mary's Belles of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association are in town … Live audio, statistics and video can be accessed at http://www.muspartans.com/sports/wvball/2016-17/boxscores/20160907_1gj8.xml.
Spartan Shorts: The Black and Gold enter their home opener with a 1-3 record. Senior outside hitter Courtney Chowning (Yorktown, Ind.) and sophomore outside hitter Farren Miller (Lebanon, Ind.) proved an effective one-two punch for Manchester University Sept. 2 and 3. The Spartans, beginning their season at the Anderson University Raven Invitational, were topped on the kills' charts by Chowning's 50 and Miller's 41. Sophomore right side hitter Haley Duncan (Albion, Ind.) wasn't far off that pace, going for 30 alone on Friday, as part of 38 total kills. Miller found her way on to the all-tournament team, adding 46 digs, second-highest on the squad, to two service aces, two blocks and a .215 attack percentage. Other stout numbers from the two-day event came from sophomore setter Dakota Stanichuk (Athens, Mich.) (134 assists); freshman middle hitter Riley Patterson (Kokomo, Ind.) (seven service aces, eight blocks); and freshman defensive specialist/libero Anna Marie Lawrie (Indianapolis, Ind.) (49 digs). After a pair of tough-luck four-set losses to Albion College and Olivet College and a three-set loss to Kalamazoo College, Coach Bryndon Paulsen's squad broke through in a big way against Waynesburg College of Pennsylvania Saturday. They compiled a .311 team hitting percentage in route to a 25-7, 25-15, 25-7 victory … MU looks for continued recent success in their home venue. They've been .500 or better in two of the previous four campaigns, the same scenario in which they've won their home openers … Fans could be in for a thriller, as the last time the two programs got together at Stauffer-Wolfe Arena, they went five. The Belles claimed a narrow victory in Sept. 2014, needing to win the fifth set 15-10 … Manchester University's non-conference slate has a strong Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association flavor as, with the St. Mary's match-up included, six of their contests are against the northern neighbors of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.
Weekend Schedule: MU goes to Angola, Ind., for a triangular against two more MIAA opponents in the host Trine University Thunder and Kalamazoo College Saturday, Sept. 10. Start times are 1 p.m. vs. the Hornets and 3 p.m. against Trine.
