ANDERSON, IND. – Senior outside hitter Courtney Chowning (Yorktown, Ind.) and sophomore outside hitter Farren Miller (Lebanon, Ind.) proved an effective one-two punch for Manchester University Friday and Saturday, Sept. 2 and 3.
The Spartans, opening the 2016 slate with a 1-3 record at the Anderson University Raven Invitational, were topped on the kills' charts by Chowning's 50 and Miller's 41. Sophomore right side hitter Haley Duncan (Albion, Ind.) wasn't far off that pace, going for 30 along on Friday, as part of 38 total kills.
Miller found her way on to the all-tournament team, adding 46 digs, second-highest on the squad, to two service aces, two blocks and a .215 attack percentage. Other stout numbers from the two-day event came from sophomore setter Dakota Stanichuk (Athens, Mich.) (134 assists); freshman middle hitter Riley Patterson (Kokomo, Ind.) (seven service aces, eight blocks); and freshman defensive specialist/libero Anna Marie Lawrie (Indianapolis, Ind.) (49 digs).
After a pair of tough-luck four-set losses to Albion College and Olivet College and a three-set loss to Kalamazoo College, Coach Bryndon Paulsen's squad broke through in a big way against Waynesburg College of Pennsylvania Saturday. They compiled a .311 team hitting percentage in route to a 25-7, 25-15, 25-7 victory.
The Spartans begin their home season Wednesday, Sept. 7, facing their fourth Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opponent to date. St. Mary's College pays a visit to Stauffer-Wolfe Arena for a 7 p.m. first serve.
