St. Francis trip begins home, away week

Manchester University takes a 4-11 overall and 0-1 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference record into a three-match span that covers Wednesday, Oct. 2 through Sunday, Oct. 6.

Match specifics: The Spartans travel to the University of St. Francis of Fort Wayne, Ind., Wednesday for a 7 p.m. match against the Cougars inside Hutzell Athletic Center on USF's campus. Live audio and video are available at www.muspartans.com, the Internet home of Manchester University athletics. MU returns to Stauffer-Wolfe Arena inside its Physical Education and Recreation Center for HCAC action against Hanover Saturday, Oct. 5, and Transylvania Sunday, Oct. 6. Match times are 5 p.m. against the Panthers and 1 p.m. against the Pioneers. Both matches will have live video streams available for viewing at www.muspartans.com and are part of the university's Homecoming 2013 festivities.

SPARTAN SHORTS: The sophomore trio of outside hitter Sarah Pruden (Noblesville, Ind.), middle hitter Devin Clark (Madison, Ind.) and setter Mikayla Munn (Elkhart, Ind.) are within the top five of varying conference statistical categories. Pruden is fifth in kills per set (3.16), Clark is second in blocks per set (.88) and Munn is fifth in assists per set (6.5) … The Spartans are also recognized on the current NCAA Division III national statistics report. They are in the top 60 in blocks per set (1.92 – 56th) … A run of three wins in the last five matches has been due, in part, to strong results in service aces and net defense. In the span, the Black and Gold have delivered 40 aces, compared to 22 for their opponents, and compiled 64 blocks in comparison to 35 for the opposition. Sophomore middle hitter Morgan Pavelka (Noblesville, Ind.) has seen her attack numbers rise in the stretch because of a .275 hitting percentage to go along with 16 blocks. Pruden has also seen positive effects with 50 kills and 11 service aces … Manchester University is off to a 1-3 start at home with a win over Indiana University-Northwest Sept. 17 and losses to Ohio Wesleyan University, Adrian College of Michigan and Capital University of Ohio at its Pizza Hut Invitational Sept. 13 and 14.

BACK-TO-BACK ROAD MATCHES AHEAD: MU travels to league preseason favorite Mt. St. Joseph Saturday, Oct. 12, and Defiance College of Ohio Wednesday, Oct. 16.
