NORTH PARK ILL. – A pair of hard-fought five-game battles with host North Park University and Aurora University of Illinois highlighted Manchester University's finish at the NPU Viking Classic Friday and Saturday, Sept. 6 and 7.
Sophomore setter Mikayala Munn (Elkhart, Ind.), en route to all=tournament honors, sparked the Spartans in the five-game matches. She had 10 kills and a.211 attack percentage, 21 assists, six block assists and eight digs versus Aurora in Saturday's first match and registered a triple-double against the Vikings Friday behind 12 kills and a .259 attack percentage, 21 assists and 16 digs.
Fellow sophomore outside hitter Sarah Pruden (Noblesville, Ind.) and freshman outside hitter Courtney Chowning also gave Aurora's defense fits with 14 kills each, while Chowning proved very strong in the back on defense with 26 digs. Pruden had a sparkling display against North Park, too. She ended with 21 kills and a meteoric .359 attack percentage and added 20 digs.
Tournament champion St. Mary's University of Minnesota and Denison University of Ohio each stopped MU in three games. Munn tallied a double-double of 13 assists and 11 digs at the Cardinals of St. Mary's while also being tough at the net defensively with one solo and four assisted blocks.
Manchester University (1-6) opens its 2013 home schedule Friday and Saturday, Sept. 13 and 14 with the annual Pizza Hut Invitational.
