GREENCASTLE, IND. – A pair of individual event titles on the track and in the field led Manchester University to a super Saturday afternoon April 14.
Sophomore distance standout Hannah Wappes (Columbia City, Ind.) swept the 800 and 1500 meter events for the second time in a meet this season. She circled the track at DePauw University's Blackstock Stadium to a time of 2:19.76, fastest in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference, in the 800, and clocked the lone 5:00-minute 1500, crossing the line in 4:58.62. Wappes' resume led her to track Athlete of the Meet honors as part of a runner-up team finish (143 points).
Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Brian Cashdollar's team added the field event top spots in the throws. Senior Jacey Cauhorn (Kendallville, Ind.) led a group of three Black and Gold athletes in the top five of the discus, standing at the top of the podium with a toss of 123 feet, five inches, while the freshmen duo of Bailey Sewell (North Manchester, Ind.) and Tara Conley (Knox, Ind.) wound up third and fifth. It was a similar recipe for Coach Kaylea Jachno's crew in the hammer with senior Kara Breuckman (Crown Point, Ind.) winning with a mark of 151 feet, 11 inches, and sophomore Austin Jones (Lapel, Ind.) and Cauhorn concluded a first three sweep.
The field event positives didn't end there. Cauhorn was a runner-up in the shot put (38 feet, six and three-quarters inches) and sophomore Katlyn Kennedy (Syracuse, Ind.) placed third. Senior Paige Keller (Greenville, Ohio) gathered a runner-up effort in the pole vault, clearing 10 feet, eight inches.
Manchester University concludes its pre-HCAC Championships slate Saturday, April 21. They join the field for the Ohio Northern University Polar Bear Invitational.
