Spartans claim two event titles

HANOVER, IND. – Sophomore distance runner Hannah Wappes (Columbia City, Ind.) didn't miss a beat from the transition between indoor and outdoor seasons Saturday, March 31.

Less than a month removed from competing at the 2018 NCAA Division III indoor Championships, Wappes led Manchester University on a brisk weekend afternoon at Hanover College's Alumnit Stadium. She raced to titles in the 800 and 1500, clocking a 2:20.93 in the half to win by nearly five full seconds and a 4:43.97 in 1500, good for third-fastest in Spartans' program history and a career personal best, that had an almost identical victory distance.

Wappes' two event triumphs helped lead Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Brian Cashdollar's team to fourth place (87 points) in the 12-team field. The Black and Gold also received strong contributions in the field events, as senior Kara Brueckman (Crown Point, Ind.) who was runner-up in the hammer (47.23 meters), second-longest in program history and a new career personal best, and javelin (33.27 meter) throws; senior Jacey Cauhorn (Kendallville, Ind.) took second in the discus (39.3 meters) and third in the hammer (43.82 meters); and Whitney White (Portage, Ind.), also a senior on assistant coach Kaylea Jachno's throwing crew, wound up third in the shot put (11.88 meters). Paige Keller (Greenville, Ohio), another Class of 2018 member, added a final top three, taking third in the pole vault (3.20 meters).

MU is back in action Saturday, April 7, joining the field for the Taylor University Invitational.
