A span of two double duals in two days starts off the fall portion of Manchester University's men's and women's tennis schedule.
Dual details: MU hosts fellow Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference member Franklin College Saturday, September 8, and welcomes Indiana University – South Bend Sunday, September 9 … First serve times 11 a.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday at MU's outdoor courts on its campus in North Manchester, Ind.
Spartan Shorts: Interim head coach Dr. Wendy Hoffman leads both programs beginning this fall. According to Hoffman, she and the teams are excited for what lies ahead. "We have a young women's team with one returner in (sophomore Karly) Eichenauer (of North Manchester, Ind.)," she noted. "Karly's going to provide vital leadership and experience. We do have a group of players beyond that who are determined and have enthusiasm. I think with a little time and development, this group could be a force to be reckoned with. We're not looking at the past, as now, it's a question of what we can do in the future." … The Spartans were picked sixth on the HCAC coaches preseason ranking, just one point from the top five. Hoffman sees hitting that mark and potentially going further keyed by the doubles factor. "Any team has to be successful (in doubles)," she said. "With what we've been doing in practices, we have some individuals ready to go that can do well (in this area). As for singles, Karly is established and (freshman Chelsea) Brettnacher (of West Lafayette, Ind.) has shown herself to be strong, too." … On the men's side, despite losing four of six starters from 2017-18, Hoffman and the Black and Gold are taking an optimistic view. "There is talent coming back, and we have three new student-athletes (for the fall) and another coming in (during the spring)," she indicated. "We've gotten a lot of practice work in already, and I'm encouraged by what I've been seeing."
