WEST INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – In the wake of a 5-0 loss at the hands of top-seed and Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season champion Hanover College, there was plenty for Coach Eric Christiansen's team to positively reflect on at the West Indy Racquet Club.
Among those things were producing an eighth straight conference postseason tournament bid and a second successive campaign in which they advanced to the Final Four. Just as occurred in 2016, the perennial league power Panthers had too much firepower for the Black and Gold to overcome in the semifinals.
The senior doubles tandem of Erin Cordill (Zionsville, Ind.) and Mariam Ali (Giza, Egypt) nearly helped the Spartans (5-6) avert a 3-0 deficit after doubles play. Alana Feeley and Caroline Millard scrapped for every point to hold them off in a 9-7 thriller. From there, it was all HC. They won number two and three each by 8-1 finals, claimed a straight-set win at number five singles and closed out their advancement to the championship with a win at number two singles.
