Black and Gold’s HCAC skein snapped

FRANKLIN, IND. – Senior Erin Cordill (Zionsville, Ind.) helped account for both points on Manchester University's team total in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play Saturday, Sept. 30.

Cordill rolled past Franklin College's Karen Dringenburg 6-3, 6-1 in singles and then joined fellow senior Mariam Ali (Giza, Egypt) in slipping past Drigenburg and Rachel Rose 9-7. Even in the wake of a 7-2 league loss that dropped MU to 3-3 overall and 3-1 in the conference, Coach Eric Christiansen's team gave the perennial top three finishing Grizzlies all they could handle on their home Mickel-Hoover Tennis Complex courts.

Senior Katie Peden (North Manchester, Ind.) pushed Alexis Schofner to a superbreak at number four singles but was stopped 10-5. Katy Ashpole (Leesburg, Ind.), who was looking to stay undefeated in singles and doubles, rebounded from a 6-3 first set loss to Lilly Bushong at number six with five game wins in set two but was topped 7-5. A 2-1 doubles edge for the home side was anything but easy, too, as Bushong and teammate Megan Battles snuck past the freshman duo of Karl Eichenauer (North Manchester, Ind.) and Avis McGovern (North Vernon, Ind.) 9-7.

The Black and Gold take back to the road Saturday, Oct. 7, taking a southern journey to Hanover College. First serve is 10 a.m. at Zeddies Tennis Center on HC's campus.
