MU winds up dual schedule

Meet details: Events start at 1 p.m. at UU's Aquatics Center.

Spartan Shorts: The Spartans go into their final dual of 2017-18 with momentum after having swept past Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Anderson University last weekend as part of a tri-meet at AU's Bennett Natatorium. Among the many influential individual efforts was another school record, as junior men's diver Anjel Clemente (Rensselaer, Ind.) tallied 175.55 points in the five-dive competition … Junior men's swimmer Guerby Ruuska (Rensselaer, Ind.) finds himself at the top of an event performance list with two weekends to go before the inaugural Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships. His 1:00.39 in the 100-yard individual medley is the league's fastest to date. Sophomore Christain Poole (Anderson, Ind.), who's first in the 50-yard butterfly (25.66 seconds), climbed to ninth in the 50-yard freestyle after his 22.25-second clocking at AU. Ruuska and Poole are No. 9 and 10, respectively in the 50-yard backstroke. MU's women also have several individuals among the top 10 of various events. As part of the freestyle races, freshman Shelby Kell (Charlottesville, Ind.) finds her name in the territory for the 1650-yard (No. 5), the 1000-yard (No. 10) and the 500-yard (No. 9), while junior teammate Mikayla Goetz (Highland, Ind.) has the eighth-fastest time in the 1650-yard. In the backstroke events, freshman Katie Blystone (Carmel, Ind.) is seventh in the 50-yard, while senior Emily Clark (Peru, Ind.) holds first ten residence in the 200-yard (No. 7) and 100-yard (No. 8) lists. Junior Jamie McBride's time at AU in the 50-yard breaststroke (36.76 seconds) leads the conference and is one of two Black and Gold efforts in the top three with freshman Kaitlyn McCloughan (Columbia City, Ind.) sitting third. The Elkhart, Ind., native is also in the top 10 of the 200-yard race. It's more of the same for the Spartans in the butterfly, as Blystone is first in the 50-yard (28.9 seconds) with senior Megan Erwin (Attica, Ind.) a close third and Clark among the top five of the 100-yard (No. 5) and 200-yard (No. 3) events. For the individual medleys, Clark headlines a one-through-three best marks sweep for Coach Mike Kroll's squad due to a 1:06.42 at the Corbiere-Merion Invitational last month, and Blystone is No. 8 in the 200-yard race.

2018 HCAC Championships: The first Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships are Friday-Sunday, Feb. 9-11, at Rose-Hulman's Natatorium in Terre Haute, Ind.
