Spartans fall to Yellow Jackets in Double OT Thriller

DEFIANCE, OH. - Not one, but two overtimes is what it took to decide the result of the Manchester-Defiance women's soccer match on October 17.

The Spartans struck early in the first half, collecting a goal from Maranda Birmingham (Kouts, Ind.) (10th minute), and Maddie Shepherd (Greenville, Ohio) quickly followed with her first goal of the season at the 11th minute. Soon after, Defiance's Kat Wicher scored for the Yellow Jackets making the score 2-1 halfway through the first period. Manchester was able to get two more shots off before Defiance's Sarah Madaras tied up the score, 2-2 leading into the half. Going into the second period, Spartan's offender Bridget Nash (Carmel, Ind.) shot attempt was just missed, and another Yellow Jacket score by Madaras push DC's lead to 3-2. Seven minutes later, Shepherd answered again to bring the Spartans back into contention making the score 3-3. With time winding down, things started to get interesting between the two HCAC foes. In the 86th minute, Defiance tallied a goal from Blake Newman putting the Yellow Jackets on top 4-3 with under four minutes left in the match. Manchester quickly answered 34 seconds later with a goal from Jessica Hundall (Noblesville, Ind.), her first one of the season. Time ran out, and the score was even 4-4 going into overtime. Both teams were able to get a shot off within the first overtime, but neither could find the back of the net sending the match into another 10 minute overtime. The Yellow Jackets out-shot the Spartans 4-1, before Whitney Webb from Defiance would score the game winning goal with under a minute left in  regulation.

Manchester's Caroline Smith (Valparaiso, Ind.) had 12 saves for the Spartan defense. Leading the way offensively was Birmingham with one goal to go with five total shots (three on goal), Shepherd with two goals and three shots (two on goal), and Nash with three shots and one assist. Isabella Zoog (Brownsburg, Ind.) and Violet Dusek (Zionsville, Ind.) recorded one assist each as well.

The Spartans are back in action Saturday, October 20 at home against Rose Hulman with a 1:00PM start.
