HANOVER, IND. – Senior midfielder Maranda Birmingham (Kouts, Ind.) registered her third goal of the season, and fellow classmate Cami Holford (Valparaiso, Ind.) recorded her second straight double-digit saves outing, guiding Manchester University Saturday, Sept. 29.
Birmingham's score, occurring in the 37th minute of the first half, denied the host Hanover College Panthers a shot at a clean sheet in the 2018 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opener for both teams. Holford and freshman netminder Gabrielle Carreon (Marion, Ind.) combined to knock away 17 home team tries on the frame, as Holford collected 12 saves. However, Hanover used a flurry of five goals in the first 37 minutes to move out quickly towards an 8-1 victory.
MU's offense tried to add to its scoreboard total with four more shots on goal. Freshman Jessica Hudnall (Noblesville, Ind.) finished with two and junior midfielder/forward Katie Green (Chesterton, Ind.) and junior defender/forward Violet Dusek (Zionsville, Ind.) took one attempt each at the home team net but all four were sent away.
The Spartans (0-11 overall, 0-1 HCAC) begin a stretch of playing three of its next four matches on its home Good Field Monday, Oct. 1. Thomas More University of Kentucky visits for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
