NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Junior midfielder Courtney Hersick (Plymouth, Ind.) registered her second career hat trick, highlighting a 7-2 Manchester University win over Defiance College Wednesday, Oct. 19.
Hersick took a pass from fellow junior midfielder Kelsey Ropp (Freeland, Mich.) in the 26th minute, sending a perfectly placed strike into the left side of the Yellow Jackets' goal for the eventual game decider. She came back to open a four-goal attack for the Spartans over the second 45 minutes, the first coming off a feed from junior forward/midfielder Pfeiffer Neubert (Dearborn, Mich.) less than two minutes after halftime and the second being an unassisted effort on a breakaway in the 52nd minute.
Hersick was one of three Black and Gold players to register big-point afternoons at Good Field. Sophomore forward/midfielder Maranda Birmingham (Kouts, Ind.) produced the final two MU goals for a four-point match, while Ropp, compiling six points, deposited the first scoring strike for the home side and added another late in the first half.
MU, improving to 2-10 overall and 2-4 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference, jumped into a three-way tie for sixth on the loop standings due to capturing their second victory in their last home tilts. The Spartans close out their regular season home slate Saturday, Oct. 22, as co-league-leading Mt. St. Joseph University of Ohio comes to North Manchester for a 1 p.m. Senior Day 2016 kickoff.
NOTES: Manchester University held a better than two-to-one shots advantage (34-16) on the visitors. Birmingham and Hersick combined for 19 of those tries … Sophomore net minder Caroline Smith (Mason, Ohio) forged through a back-and-forth first half affair, picking up her second win of the season and sixth of her career with five saves.
