NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Manchester University opened a home and away week facing off against co-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference-leading Franklin College Wednesday, Oct. 12.
Despite a 7-0 loss to the visiting side, the Spartans (1-9 overall, 1-3 HCAC) forced a pair of saves out of Grizzly net minder Lexi Short. Both came from junior midfielder Courtney Hersick (Plymouth, Ind.) as part of four total attempts. Fellow junior midfielder Kelsey Ropp (Freeland, Mich.) also found herself with a multiple-shot afternoon at Good Field, tallying two chances.
On the defensive end, sophomore goalkeeper Caroline Smith (Mason, Ohio) battled through a 25-8 shots disadvantage with seven saves. She and the Black and Gold defense managed to keep the count at 2-0 through a large share of the opening frame before Franklin's offense went into high gear with four goals in a 15-minute period that started late in the first stanza and ran early into the second half.
The Spartans, sitting tied for sixth with Anderson University, Transylvania University and Earlham College, take a critical road trip to Lexington, Ky., for a meeting with the Pioneers Saturday, Oct. 15. Kickoff is 1 p.m. at TU's Athletic Complex.
