NOTRE DAME, IND. – The sophomore – junior combination of forward Maranda Birmingham (Kouts, Ind.) and midfielder Courtney Hersick (Plymouth, Ind.) proved a strong one Friday and Saturday, Sept. 2 and 3.
Picking up where she left off during a sparkling first-year campaign of six goals and 14 points to lead the 2015 squad, Birmingham posted both of Manchester University's scores during the St. Mary's Invitational. In each case, Hersick, who was the co-team leader in assists as a sophomore, fed the ball in her direction. Due to the efforts, they were each named to the all-tournament team.
The tandem first worked their magic in a match-up against the host Belles Friday, as a tally in the 20th minute forced a 1-1 tie. They came back Saturday for a strike less than five minutes into the second half against Kalamazoo College. The performances highlighted the weekend for MU, as Coach Christine Johnson's side couldn't add more to the offensive totals, falling 4-1 to St. Mary's and 6-1 to the Hornets.
Manchester University resumes a brief three-match road swing to begin 2016 Wednesday, Sept. 7. They travel to Heidelberg University of the Ohio Athletic Conference for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
