NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Senior goalkeeper Emily Willmann's 23rd career shutout is one she won't soon forget.
The program's all-time shutout leader notched eight saves to keep Mt. St. Joseph off the scoreboard at Spartan Field and help celebrate Senior Day 2014 for herself and seven of her Black and Gold teammates. Meanwhile, Manchester University's offense produced a pair of first half goals as part of a 2-0 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference win Saturday, Nov. 1.
Willmann and the Black and Gold defense had to be stout, as the visiting Lions out-shot the Spartans 21-19. Senior midfielder Sofie Tzortzinis (Ann Arbor, Mich.) helped ease the pressure with a goal in the first 10 minutes off an assist from freshman midfielder/forward Pfeiffer Neubert (Dearborn, Mich.), and junior midfielder Bridgette Rowe (La Quinta, Calif.) added a key strike in the final minute of the opening stanza to cushion the advantage. Senior forward Katelyn Barta (Griffith, Ind.) topped the home side shot chart with eight attempts.
MU's decision pushed their record to 8-9-1 overall and 5-3-1 in league play and wrapped up the program's third successive appearance in the HCAC postseason tournament. The number four seeded Spartans travel to top-seeded Hanover College Tuesday, Nov. 4 for one of two semifinal round contests. Kickoff at HC's L.S. Ayres Athletic Complex is 2 p.m.
NOTES: Willmann recorded her 13th match this season in which she compiled five-or-more saves … Rowe added to her team lead in goals (nine) and tied Barta for the points lead (20) … Tzortzinis became the fifth MU player to tally a game-winning goal.
