Second half flurry sends MU past Defiance

NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – A 19-8 shots advantage over the second 45 minutes Wednesday, Oct. 8, helped Manchester University wear down a determined Defiance College squad in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference action.

After Black and Gold senior goalkeeper Emily Willmann (Montpelier, Ind.) and her Defiance College counterpart June Delgreco kept their respective ends of the pitch void of opposing goals for the opening half and 10-plus minutes into the second stanza, the host Spartans broke through at 55:53 when junior midfielder Bridgette Rowe (La Quinta, Calif.) took a pass from senior midfielder Amber Kent (Fountaintown, Ind.) down the right side and snuck it past Delgreco for a 1-0 edge. Rowe's score, the eventual game winner, was followed by strikes from junior forward Brandy Crouse (Cleves, Ohio) and senior forward Katelyn Barta (Griffith, Ind.) over the next 30 minutes. MU (5-6 overall, 2-0 HCAC) held a 30-14 overall shots margin on visiting Defiance (2-10, 0-2 HCAC) with Barta and Bridgette Rowe accumulating seven each.

Willmann highlighted the defensive effort by adding to her career program record shutout total with a 22nd clean sheet. She knocked away six Yellowjackets' shot on goal attempts.

The Spartans continue league play Saturday, Oct. 11, with a road trip to Hanover College for a meeting between two of the current three unbeaten sides. Kickoff is 1 p.m.

NOTES: Rowe kept her team lead in overall goals (five), points (12), total shots (30), shots on goal (18) and game-winning goals (two). She's registered game-winning scores in back-to-back matches … MU heads into the weekend on a recent hot streak having won three of its last four.
