LEXINGTON, KY. – Junior midfielder Bridgette Rowe (La Quinta, Calif.) produced a five-point afternoon Saturday, Oct. 4, leading Manchester University to a key Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory.
Rowe scored the match's first goal, tallied an assist on the second one and then came back in the second extra session to follow a rebound off a lined shot by senior forward Katelyn Barta (Griffith, Ind.) into the Transylvania University of Kentucky net for the decisive tally in a 4-3 Spartans' win. Her totals moved her into the squads' goals (four), points (10) and game-winning goal (two) categories.
The deciding strike closed a back-and-forth affair at TU's Pat Deacon Stadium. MU (4-6 overall, 1-0 HCAC) jumped out quickly on its hosts, posting two goals in the opening 20 minutes, before the Pioneers (2-9, 0-1 HCAC) registered three successive goals for a 3-2 edge in the second half. Senior midfielder Amber Oster (Waterloo, Ind.) picked up her first marker of the season in the 88th minute for the 3-3 tie before both sides settled in for an extra period-plus until Rowe's rebound ended it.
Manchester University held a 21-13 shots advantage. Junior forward Brandy Crouse (Cleves, Ohio) and Rowe were one-two with six and five, respectively. On the defensive side, senior goalkeeper Emily Willmann (Montpelier, Ind.) concluded her day with eight saves in 104 minutes and 38 seconds.
The Black and Gold continue conference competition Wednesday, Oct. 8. Defiance College of Ohio visits Spartan Field for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
NOTES: Manchester University has won three of its last five after a 1-4 start … Rowe's point total was the most in a match for a Spartans' player since Barta put up seven against Kentucky Christian last September.
