Strong defensive effort ends short

SPRINGFIELD, OHIO – Manchester University kept North Coast Athletic Conference opponent at bay for a half-plus in non-conference action Wednesday, Sept. 30. However, the host Tigers managed to break through the stubborn Spartans' defense in the second half en route to a 2-0 non-conference victory.

Senior goalkeeper Emily Willmann (Montpelier, Ind.) fought through a 13-4 shots advantage by host Wittenberg University over the opening 45 minutes, knocking away five attempts that went towards the Black and Gold net. Wittenberg (4-3-1) untied the scoreless draw in the 49th minute and added another strike less than five minutes later.

MU (3-6) did finish with seven shot attempts at Edwards-Maurer Field. Junior forward Brandy Crouse (Cleves, Ohio) fired off four of them, while freshman midfielder Jenny Pudlo (Crown Point, Ind.) added two tries, and junior midfielder Bridgette Rowe (La Quinta, Calif.) picked up one shot which found its way towards the WU goal but was stopped.

The Spartans, concluding their regular season non-conference schedule, turn their attention to Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play this weekend. A trip to Transylvania University of Kentucky opens the league slate Saturday, Oct. 4, at 1 p.m.
