Junior forward Katelyn Barta (Griffith, Ind.) scored both goals of a 2-1 win at in-state and NCAA Division III rival Trine University Sept. 3. It was the second multiple-goal outing of her career, as she led the Spartans to their fifth win in the last seven meetings against the Thunder. ... The Black and Gold also highlighted the road swing with a double-overtime scoreless tie at Gettysburg College of Pennsylvania Aug. 31. Junior goalkeeper Emily Willmann (Montpelier, Ind.), blanking the fifth-ranked team on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's Mid-Atlantic regional poll, turned in a 16-save night that tied a personal match high for her.
Men: Coach Dave Good's team continues a season-opening three-match home stand this weekend. The Spartans produced a solid second half performance against Concordia University of Illinois Aug. 31, but the Cougars tallied three first half goals for a 3-1 victory. ... MU held an 18-13 shots advantage over their guests and avoided the shutout in the 62nd minute. Junior midfielder Zac Hansen (Muskegon, Mich.) lofted a well-placed cross into the Concordia goalkeeper's box that sophomore defender/midfielder Drew Vergonet (Elkhart, Ind.) took and hammered into the back of the net.
Looking Ahead: Both teams take to the road next week. The men travel to Huntington, Ind., for a non-conference in-state battle with the Foresters Tuesday, Sept. 10, and then go to Trine University in Angola, Ind., for matches against Adrian College of Michigan and the host Thunder Friday and Saturday, Sept. 13 and 14 as part of TU's Ketner Classic. MU's women also stay in state with a trip to Goshen Wednesday, Sept. 11.
