DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Manchester University women's basketball team fell short on the road in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play at Defiance College on Wednesday night. The Yellow Jackets outlasted the Spartans in a hard-fought game by a final score of 69-55.
Defiance shot a torrid 62 percent (8-of-13) in the opening quarter, however the Spartans trailed by just six after connecting on 4-of-6 threes in the first 10 minutes. Defiance built a 40-30 lead at halftime after narrowly outscoring MU 18-14 in the second quarter.
The Spartans used strong defense out of the intermission to hold Defiance to just 1-of-14 shooting in the third period. Manchester University took advantage of the cold shooting and outscored Defiance 11-7 in the third frame.
Defiance outlasted the Spartans late in Wednesday's game, knocking down 14-of-16 free throws in the final period. For the game, Defiance finished 25-of-29 from the charity stripe.
Haley Farris (Sharpsville, Ind. / Tri-Central) led MU's balanced attack with 10 points. Faith-Alexis Graham (Indianapolis, Ind. / North Central) filled the state line with 10 rebounds, seven points, five assists and four steals. Both Nicole Weaver (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Homestead) and Beth Schaefer (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Carroll) added nine points.
Defiance improved to 5-13, 4-7 HCAC this season while MU dropped to 2-15, 0-10 HCAC. Manchester will hit the road again on Saturday January 26, traveling to Mount St. Joseph. Gametime between the Spartans and Lions is scheduled for 3 p.m.
