NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. – The Manchester University women's basketball team fell short against visiting Anderson University in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play on Wednesday night in Stauffer-Wolfe Arena. The Ravens outlasted the Spartans 54-45.
Manchester remained close for much of the opening half and built a six-point lead towards the end of the second quarter due in large part to a 12-2 run. During that run, the Spartans got baskets from Haley Farris (Sharpsville, Ind. / Tri-Central) and Nicole Weaver (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Homestead).
The Ravens closed the gap just before halftime as Lexi Dellinger scored five straight points to bring AU within one. Manchester led 22-21 at halftime.
A strong third quarter by Anderson gave the Ravens control of Wednesday night's game. AU outscored the Spartans 21-10 in the third quarter.
The Spartans were able to trim a double digit Raven lead to just six with just 1:39 left in the game. Anderson converted foul shots down the stretch to secure the win.
Free throw shooting was a factor in Wednesday night's contest. The Ravens finished 17-of-26 (65.4 percent). Manchester was 7-of-16 (43.8 percent) from the charity stripe. On the night, Anderson finished 16-of-48 (33 percent) from the floor and 5-of-16 (38.5 percent) from three. Manchester University shot 17-77 (22.1 percent) and 4-of-19 (21.1 percent) from downtown.
Lexi Dellinger led the Ravens with 15 points.
The Ravens improved to 8-6, 4-3 HCAC with Wednesday's win. The Spartans fell to 2-12, 0-7 HCAC. MU will hit the road this weekend and travel to Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky. Game time against the Pioneers is scheduled for Saturday January 12 at 1 p.m.
