RICHARDSON, Texas – The Manchester University women's basketball team concluded competition in the University of Texas-Dallas Courtyard Classic on Saturday afternoon against the Concordia (Texas) Golden Tornados. The Spartans fell to Concordia by a final score of 61-53.
The Spartans remained close in the early going, trailing by eight at halftime 29-21. Concordia shot 35.5% (11-31) after two quarters of play. The Golden Tornados knocked down five three-pointers in the opening two quarters. Manchester shot 9-27 (33.3%) in the first half.
Manchester and Concordia both battled in the second half and Manchester was able to whittle the Golden Tornados' lead down to just a basket midway through the third quarter. The Spartans made one final push in the fourth quarter; a three-pointer from Nicole Weaver (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Homestead) cut Concordia's lead down to 55-50. Concordia made a few late free throws to seal the victory.
For the game, the Spartans were held to 32.3% (20-62) shooting from the floor. Manchester made seven of 26 three-point filed goal attempts. Concordia shot 39.6% (21-53) for the game. CU made eight of 21 three-point field goal attempts. The Spartans were able to force Concordia into committing 23 turnovers in Saturday's game.
Freshman Bridget Nash (Carmel, Ind. / Bishop Chatard) bested her career-high of 12 points, set yesterday against McMurry, with 14 points against the Golden Tornados. She finished 5-9 from the field and 4-7 from beyond the three-point arc. Faith-Alexis Graham (Indianapolis, Ind. / North Central) also reach double figures with 13 points.
MU fell to 2-9 on the year. Concordia improved to 5-8 this season. Manchester will return to the Hoosier State as Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference competition will continue following the New Year's holiday. The Spartans will travel to Franklin College on Wednesday January 2, 2019. Tip against the Grizzlies is set for 7:30 p.m.
