RICHARDSON, Texas – A strong, second-half surge by McMurry University gave the War Hawks a 78-64 win over Manchester University in the opening game of the University of Texas-Dallas Courtyard Classic on Friday afternoon.
The Spartans opened the contest with an 8-2 run to close out the first quarter, taking a 17-14 lead after the first 10 minutes of action. Strong defense prevailed in the second quarter as Manchester limited the War Hawks to just 10 points. Through 20 minutes of play, the Spartans held McMurry to 9-28 (32.1%) shooting from the floor. Manchester led 31-24 at halftime. Freshman Bridget Nash (Carmel, Ind. / Bishop Chatard) scored eight of her 12 points in the first half. Fellow freshman Hillery Shepherd (Middletown, Ind. / Shenandoah) scored six of her career-high eight points in the first half.
A three-point play by senior Maddy Minehart (Auburn, Ind. / Eastside) put the Spartans up 38-31 with seven minutes left to play in the third quarter. However, the War Hawks found their stride offensively and used a 14-3 run to wrestle the lead away from the Spartans. McMurry University scored 54 points in the second half, outscoring Manchester 54-33
For the game the Spartans shot 42.9% (24-56) from the floor. Manchester was forced into 23 turnovers in the contest; McMurry turned the ball over 19 times. The War Hawks shot 30-68 (44.1%) from the field.
Maddy Minehart led a balanced attack for the Spartans, scoring 14 points and grabbing seven rebounds. Bridget Nash finished with 12 points. Haley Farris (Sharpsville, Ind. / Tri-Central) added four steals in the game.
Skyler Reyna led the War Hawks with 19 points. Isabel Carrion added 17 points.
Manchester fell to 2-8 on the year. McMurry improved to 3-9 overall. Manchester will complete competition in the UTD Courtyard Classic tomorrow, Saturday December 29, at 2 p.m. (1 p.m. CT) against the Concordia (Texas) Golden Tornados.
