NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. – The visiting Defiance Yellow Jackets used a late surge in the fourth quarter to pull away from Manchester University on Tuesday night. The Spartans fell to Yellow Jackets by a final score of 71-57.
Both offenses struggled in Tuesday night's contest, but the Yellow Jackets outscored Manchester 27-17 in the final period to earn their second win in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play.
Defiance shot just 21-70 (30%) from the field, however, 10 of the Yellow Jackets made field goals were three-pointers. DC also made good use of the free throw line, converting 19 of 22 attempts, good for an 86.4% clip.
Manchester also struggled from the field, shooting 21-66 (31.8%) for the game. The Spartans were 6-23 (26.1%) and went 9-20 (45%) from the free throw line.
Defiance also controlled the boards on Tuesday night, totaling 61 rebounds, 22 of which were offensive. MU finished the game with 39 rebounds.
The Spartans were led by Haley Farris (Sharpsville, Ind. / Tri-Central), who finished with a team-high 10 points. Hannah Smith (Upland, Ind. / Eastbrook) scored eight points and added six rebounds. Bridget Nash (Carmel, Ind. / Bishop Chatard) scored eight points, grabbed five rebounds, and added three assists and two steals.
Defiance College was led by Taylor Day's 15 points and 17 rebounds.
With the loss to the Yellow Jackets, Manchester fell to 2-7, 0-4 HCAC on the season. Defiance improved to 2-7, 2-2 HCAC. The women will get a few days off before returning to the hardwood. The Spartans will travel to Richardson, Texas for the UTD Courtyard Classic. Manchester University will take on McMurry and Concordia (Texas) on December 28 and 29. Both of those games are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. EST.
