Busy January begins at home

NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. - A set of nine contests for Manchester University over the first month of 2018 starts Wednesday, Jan. 3.

Game details: MU's women host Franklin College in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off at Stauffer-Wolfe Arena ... Coach Josh Dzurick's squad stands 2-9 overall and 1-3 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference ... FC's has captured 13 of the last 16, including both contests a year ago, but the outcome has been decided by 10 points-or-less nine times in the span.

Spartan Shorts: Junior forward/center Beth Schaefer (Fort Wayne, Ind.), who's grabbed six-or-more boards in nine successive games, finds herself among the league's top five in rebounding through 11 contests. Her average of just under eight per game (7.9) is fourth-highest. Digging deeper, sophomore guard Nicole Weaver (Fort Wayne, Ind.) is within the top 10 in points (12.5 – No. 9), steals (1.9 – No. 10) and assists (3.2 – No. 6) per game and fellow sophomore guard Haley Farris (Sharpsville, Ind.) ranks in the same territory in free throw accuracy (74.3) … The Black and Gold are coming off a hard-fought 69-64 overtime loss Dec. 30 at the hands of Midwest Conference foe Beloit College of Wisconsin that concluded their regular season non-conference schedule. Schaefer turned in her second double-double of the season and third of her collegiate career, to lead Manchester University, hitting on five-of-13 field goal attempts and was four-of-eight at the charity stripe in route to 14 points. She also harassed the Buccaneer offense and defense with 11 rebounds, three of which were on the offensive end, four steals and a blocked shot. Weaver and freshman guard Mikalia Taylor (Connersville, Ind.) joined their upperclasswoman teammate in point double figures with 14 and 16, respectively. Weaver was also a team statistical leader, dishing off three assists … Weaver goes into the evening having registered double-digit point totals in six straight outings. Taylor has also seen her scoring stock rise, with her 9.3 points per game average at a season's best due in large part to averaging 13 per appearance on the recent Los Angeles and Wisconsin trips.

Hanover Twinbill: Game times are 1 p.m. for the women and 3 p.m. for the men at SWA on MU's campus Saturday, Jan. 6.
