Manchester University's 2017-18 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference campaign continues Saturday, Dec. 9.
Game details: Tip-off time is 2 p.m. versus Earlham College at Stauffer-Wolfe Arena … Live audio, statistics, and video are available via links at www.muspartans.com, the Internet home of Manchester University athletics …MU seeks to halt a recent tough luck span. They sport a 1-5 overall and 0-2 loop record after having dropped five straight, while the Quakers are 1-5 overall and 1-1 in the conference. The Spartans have captured 13 of the last 15 in recent series history.
Spartan Shorts: Junior forward/center Beth Schaefer (Fort Wayne, Ind.) continues to climb the conference's rebounding chart. Due to cleaning the glass at a rate of eight-or-more boards in five of the six games this season, she's averaging just under eight (7.7) to rank fifth. Schaefer's not far off the top 10 in scoring or field goal percentage, either, as her 11.5 points per game average and 48.3 conversion rate are both 11th-highest. Looking further on the league numbers, sophomore guard Nicole Weaver (Fort Wayne, Ind.) is tied for sixth in scoring (12.8 ppg), her 3.2 assists per contest are eighth-best, and her steals' average of almost two per outing (1.8) sit 10th … The duo each added to their impressive season starts in a 79-64 loss at Defiance College that began the week. Weaver finished with 15 points, five assists, and four steals, and Schaefer was just shy of a double-double with eight points and nine rebounds. The first-year pair of guard Mikalia Taylor (Connersville, Ind.) and Hannah Smith (Upland, Ind.) added to the positives with 11 and 10 points, respectively … Answering back-to-back 20-point-plus scoring totals from DC over the first two stanzas, Coach Josh Dzurick's side whittled an 18-point halftime deficit down to as little as six in the second half before the Yellow Jackets regained control in route to the win. The centerpiece of the rally was a 16-6 third period attack.
