Home and away week begins Wednesday

The 2016-17 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference campaign continues Wednesday, Jan. 11.

Game Details: Manchester University hosts Bluffton University for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff on the Stan Weller Court honoring Coaches Hoffman and Wolfe at Stauffer-Wolfe Arena … Live audio, statistics and video can be viewed via a link at www.muspartans.com, the Internet home of Manchester University athletics … MU has a 16-11 edge in the series dating back to 2004-05, but Bluffton has won eight of the last 10 including sweeping the 2015-16 results.

Spartan Shorts: There were plenty to smiles to go around Jan. 7, and with good reason. The Spartans, returning to .500 in loop play, turned away previous league unbeaten Rose-Hulman in an overtime thriller at the SWA … A crowd of better than 300 fans got their money's worth and more from the tight-knit clash that ended with a 57-53 victory. Taking advantage of cool shooting from the visiting Fightin' Engineers, the Black and Gold (4-9 overall, 3-3 league) tallied 13 of the game's first 19 points. Keeping poised whenever the conference leaders were on the verge of a run, they remained on the right side of the scoreboard throughout the afternoon, trailing only three times over the 45 minutes. A 10-of-14 effort at the charity stripe in the extra session finally decided the outcome that enabled them to jump into a tie for fifth in the standings … Sophomore guard Faith-Alexis Graham (Indianapolis, Ind.) helped spark the Spartans, scoring a single-game personal career best 16 points to go with three steals. She was joined by a pair of upperclasswomen in double-digit points. Senior guard Jenifer Lee (Rockville, Ind.) contributed 13 and dished out four assists, and junior forward/center Samantha Bolen (Greenwood, Ind.) resumed her consistency inside the paint with 10 to go with six rebounds … Four statistical categories remain ranked within the HCAC's top 10 through 13 games. Freshman guard Nicole Weaver (Fort Wayne, Ind.) tops the list, sitting fifth in free throw percentage (84.4); Lee is eighth in three-point field goal accuracy (34.8 pct.); Bolen joins Weaver on the free throw accuracy top 10 (10th – 79); sophomore forward/guard Beth Schaefer's (Fort Wayne, Ind.) 5.8 boards per contest are ninth-highest; and junior forward/center Torrie Christlieb's (Culver, Ind.) .8 blocks per game are tied for eighth-best.

Bluegrass Bash – The Black and Gold take their yearly trip to Lexington, Ky., for a league doubleheader against the Pioneers of Transylvania University Saturday, Jan. 14.
