Spartan Shorts: A quick start in the 2016-17 league opener was turned away by host Hanover College Dec. 3. The Panthers scored 29 of the 41 points registered in the second 10 minutes to overturn a 23-16 deficit at the end of the opening stanza, helping lift them past Manchester University 90-75. Positives for Coach Josh Dzurick's squad came from freshman guard Hannah Newby (Danville, Ind.), junior forward/center Torrie Christlieb (Culver, Ind.), fellow junior forward Samantha Bolen (Greenwood, Ind.) and freshman guard Haley Farris (Sharpsville, Ind.). Newby turned in her best outing to date in an MU uniform, scoring a team-high 16 points, due in large part to a six-for-six performance at the free throw line, to go with three assists and three steals. Christlieb, like Newby, came off the bench, tallying seven points on a 100 percent afternoon from the field (three-for-three) to go with two blocked shots and a steal. Farris made the most of her 18 minutes on the floor, as she grabbed four rebounds, dished out two assists and finished with three steals … Despite an 0-6 overall and 0-1 HCAC mark, the Black and Gold is making noise on the conference statistical charts. Bolen has the fifth-best free throw percentage among players who have attempted 15-or-more (87 percent), while freshman guard Nicole Weaver (Fort Wayne, Ind.) is one spot behind her (86 percent); Weaver's shooting prowess doesn't stop at the charity stripe, as her 35.7 percent accuracy from outside the arc is in the top 10; and Christlieb is tied for eighth in blocked shots (one per game) … Wednesday's tilt ends a current run of five successive road dates. The Spartans return home Saturday, Dec. 10, for a 1 p.m. clash against Mt. St. Joseph.
