Spartan Shorts: The Black and Gold (6-18 overall, 4-13 HCAC) close their season with the southern trek. MU gave Defiance College a stiff test early in their home season finale Feb. 17, leading by as many as nine in the opening 20 minutes. However, the Yellowjackets answered with a 30-12 second half stretch to claim a 66-51 decision. Sophomore forward Tori Christlieb (Culver, Ind.) led the way with an 11-point, nine-rebound effort. Freshman forward/center Maddy Minehart (Auburn, Ind.) was next in line scoring-wise with nine, while junior guard Jenifer Lee (Rockville, Ind.) and freshman guard Faith-Alexis Graham (Indianapolis, Ind.) tallied seven points apiece. Lee also added a team-best three assists to her stat line … Taking a close look at the mid-week individual efforts, Christlieb was just a rebound off her third double-double of the season. Her nine boards resumed an impressive recent run, as her season average is up seven-tenths (5.5-6.2) in the span of the last six outings. Lee continued a solid late-season roll, too. She's tallied five-points-or-more in nine of the last 10 contests, multiple assists three times in the period and multiple steals four times in the stretch … Four Spartans rank among the conference's statistical top 10. Senior guard Justine Kruger (Francesville, Ind.) tops the list, as she's tied for fifth in steals (1.7 pg); fellow senior guard Katie Arterburn (Indianapolis, Ind.) is sixth in three-point field goal accuracy (35.9 pct.); Christlieb stands eighth in blocked shots (.8 pg) and is just outside the territory in rebounding (6.2 pg – No. 11); and sophomore forward Samantha Bolen (Greenwood, Ind.) is 10th in free throw conversion rate (77.8) … TU picked up a 77-53 victory in North Manchester last month, but close-knit finishes are a series trend of late. Four of the last six meetings have been decided by 12-points-or-less.
