Spartan Shorts: The host Spartans are among a four-team photo finish for the final spots in the 2016 conference postseason championships. MU sports a 6-17 overall and 4-12 league mark and is tied with league rival Anderson University for seventh, just a game behind DC and Hanover who are each 5-11 in sixth place … The Black and Gold is coming off a hard-fought 55-50 loss at the hands of co-conference leading Rose-Hulman Feb. 13. The guard trio of Katie Arterburn (Indianapolis, Ind.), Kelcey Daugherty (Greenwood, Ind.) and Justine Kruger (Francesville, Ind.) was honored prior to tip-off during Senior Day 2016 festivities, and they each contributed statistical support during the afternoon. Daugherty was recognized in a poignant display of sportsmanship by both sides by being put in the contest to score the game's first points for the Spartans; Kruger compiled eight points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals; and Arterburn ended with six points, due to a perfect three-of-three effort at the free throw line, and a blocked shot. Kruger's stalwart rebounding, assist and steal totals have become commonplace of late. She's registered five-or-more boards five times in the last six contests; dished out multiple assists in three successive and four of the last five games played and picked off multiple steals in seven of her last eight appearances … Sophomore forward Samantha Bolen (Greenwood, Ind.) tallied 14 points to lead all scorers against the Fightin' Engineers. She hit four-of-seven from the field and six-of-eight from the charity stripe to make up the total. Bolen tallied her 10th double-digit effort of the year and second in the last three contests … A quartet of individuals are still among the league's statistical top 10 with two games to play. Kruger headlines the group, ranking fifth in steals (1.8 pg); Arterburn and Bolen are seventh-best, respectively, in three-point accuracy (36.1) and free throw conversion (78.4); and sophomore forward Tori Christlieb's (Culver, Ind.) current roll of 14 blocked shots over the last six contests, an average of 2.5 per outing, has risen her season total to .9 per game which ranks eighth … Manchester University has claimed 10 of the last 15 all-time, but Defiance won this year's season edition opener 68-47 at home in early December.
