Spartan Shorts: With three weeks of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference slate remaining, the Black and Gold (6-13 overall, 4-8 league) is still in the postseason tournament picture. They start a home-and-away week tied for sixth with Hanover College and Defiance College … MU holds a 16-10 edge in the series since 2004-05, but Bluffton has claimed seven of the last nine including a 66-32 home victory last month … The trio of senior guard Katie Arterburn (Indianapolis, Ind.), senior guard Justine Kruger (Francesville, Ind.) and sophomore forward Samantha Bolen (Greenwood, Ind.) is among the conference's statistical top 10 through games played on Jan. 30. Arterburn has risen into the top five in three-point field accuracy (38.7 percent); Kruger is tied for ninth in steals (1.6 per game); and Bolen is seventh in free throw percentage (78.3). Freshman guard Faith-Alexis Graham (Indianapolis, Ind.) and sophomore forward Tori Christlieb (Culver, Ind.) are close by, ranking 11th in assists (2.8 pg) and rebounds (5.7 pg), respectively … Arterburn's three-point prowess was proven again in a 59-52 loss at the hands of Mt. St. Joseph Jan. 30. She canned five as part of a team-high 19 points. Other individual success from the game included Arterburn pushing her personal double-figure scoring streak to four straight which has seen her season average move into double digits (9.1-10); Graham recording her 13th multiple assist outing with a personal single-game high; freshman guard/forward Beth Schaefer's (Fort Wayne, Ind.) seven rebounds marking her fourth appearance with five-or-more; and junior guard Jennifer Lee (Rockville, Ind.), who's registering over nine points per game in her last four appearances, seeing her season average rise eight-tenths (5.4-6.2) in that span.
