Spartans, Hanover prepare for weekend HCAC battle

Spartan Shorts – Manchester University (13-11 overall, 10-7 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference) sits in a tie for fourth with Bluffton University of Ohio going into the final game of the 2013-14 HCAC slate. They are both just a game behind Franklin College for third … Despite a tough field goal shooting night, the home-standing Spartans nearly picked up a key Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference win Feb. 19. Visiting Defiance College of Ohio drained a three-pointer in the final 30 seconds to earn a hard-fought 47-45 win. The Spartans were guided in scoring by senior forward Erynn Meiklejohn (Fort Wayne, Ind.). She tallied 10 points to go with three assists and a blocked shot, both of which were team highs. Sophomore forward Kasey Reneau (Hagerstown, Ind.) was just off the pace for a double-double with seven points and 10 rebounds, while freshman guard Jenifer Lee (Rockville, Ind.) and Kruger each tossed in six points. MU ended the game hitting at a 35.7 percent clip from the field which included going zero-for-four from outside the arc … Meiklejohn's double-figure effort continued a string of four successive and five double digits finishes in her last six appearances. Her points per game average is up five-tenths (10.8 – 11.3) in the span … Junior guard Jocelyn Hamilton (Columbus, Ind.) upped her string of multiple assist games to 24 in a row with two. She now has 131 for the season … Reneau registered her second double-digit rebound contest. She ended with 12 against the College of Mt. St. Joseph in early January … Hamilton continues to keep her league lead in assists, averaging 5.5 per game. She's ranked in the top 20 of NCAA Division III in the same category (No. 18) in games played through Feb. 16 as well as No. 26 in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.26). Sophomore guard Katie Arterburn (Indianapolis, Ind.), junior center Alyssa Hammond (Osgood, Ind.) and Meiklejohn also have strong residence in the HCAC statistics. Hammond and Meiklejohn are each in the top 10 in blocked shots (Meiklejohn – No. 6 – 1.2 pg/Hammond No. 8 - .7 pg), while Arterburn is No. 8 in three-point field goal accuracy (36.3 pct.) … The series with Hanover has been closely-contested with nine of the last 13 games being decided by 10 points or less. The Panthers won the opener at Hanover 83-64 in mid-January.

2014 HCAC Tournament: The Spartans have clinched a spot in the six-team field. Final brackets will be released Saturday evening, Feb. 22.
